Curious about how to always have a ripe avocado?
Bubbly Tourist loves avocados! Avocados are tasty, nutritious, relatively easy (and cheap) to buy and can be used both as savory and sweet (chocolate mousse made with avocado anyone?). But how do you buy and store them so that you can always have a ripe avocado at the ready? Here is the trick. 3-4 days before you want to use an avocado head to the grocery store. You want to purchase your avocados when the skin is bright green and the avocado is very firm. By firm, we mean there is NO give at all when the avocado is gently squeezed. Bubbly Tourist likes to purchase multiple at a time. Once home from the store, put one out on the counter and the rest in the fridge. Over the next few days the avocado on the counter will change colors from bright green to a green-purple and then fully purple-black. An avocado is ready to eat when it is softish when squeezed. This part is a bit of an art. If it is too hard the avocado will still be unripe and hard when sliced ( although perfectly edible just crunchy), if it is too soft the avocado may be past it's peak when you open with brown spots inside. A bit of trial and error and you will know exactly when an avocado is ready. So how do you always have a ripe avocado? The key is to set an avocado on the kitchen counter then wait a few days before pulling out another (we call this one the "avocado in waiting") from the fridge. This way, everytime we open an avocado, another one is just a day away from eating. YUM!
